The sources you cited are dubious at best. The WSWS article really doesn't say much about anything. If you want a real discussion of Trotsky and HUAC go to the Historians of American Communism listserv. See the disccusions in July 2006.

As for the other two articles, they are completely unreliable. They take minor facts and extrapolate beyond what the facts actually mean. You linked to an article from Grover Furr's website. He is a crank, who no honest observer takes seriously. Well other than you I guess.

One article was written in 1988. The Soviet archives that prove Conquest correct were not opened until nearly a decade later.

Try reading the Black Book of Communism.

I will try to re-address (verbally) your email on the next show. Beyond this, the focus of the show is not really detailed Soviet history. If this is a debate you are really itching to have, I would recommend joining the listerv stalinist@yahoogroups, which contains a mixture of critics, true believers, and academic types dealing specifically with Soviet history during the Stalin era.

I am familiar with the Black Book of Communism, and find it about as unreliable as I suspect you would find any source I would offer you--a true believer yourself, just in a different system. As more bourgeois sources go, I would highly recommend Thurston's "Life and Terror," as well as some work by J. Arch Getty. Beyond addressing your basic points, it seems pointless and a bit of a waste of time trying to convince you of something you've already decided of which you've already decided you won't be convinced.

I agree, that we disagree. I was not necessarily trying to convert you. I just wanted to share with you some of the more recent scholarship. Getty's has revised his assessment of deaths under Stalin upward.
